Why are free apps free? It’s all about crapware… but you don’t have to take it.

image

Ever wondered why free apps are free? The answer is crapware.

Follow the money. When you download your next free game or utility, that money’s not coming from you… it’s coming from other software makers.

These aren’t the guys putting out addictive games and helpful apps. Their software tracks your browsing, watches your purchases, redirects your browser to their own sites… and slows your system down, sometimes to a grinding halt. They’re not technically viruses, but they might as well be, auctioning off your privacy and bogging down even the fastest devices.

Crapware:  the terrible statistics

How many of the top free download sites are bundling crapware with your freebies? All of them, according to this report.

That’s right: 100%. Almost every single download, even from reliable sites, is bloated with garbage.

Where’s the line between ethical adware and sneaky, underhanded crapware?

When I play my favorite Solitaire game on my Android phone, it shows a little ad at the bottom of my screen. I totally don’t mind. They have my permission to use that tiny bit of real estate… in return for a lot of free gameplay.

That’s the main difference between crapware and ethical adware: permission.

My solitaire game offers a quid pro quo – free gaming in return for my eyeballs. Crapware, bloatware, malware, whatever you call it, doesn’t bother asking. At least, not so most users can understand.

How can you protect yourself?

The easiest way to protect yourself is the simple checkbox.

Installers usually ask if you want to add the extra garbage. But like me, maybe you click “Next” to get through all the screens without really reading them.

Just by unchecking any checkboxes you can, you’ll be doing yourself and your device a huge favor. (If there’s an Advanced or Custom option, they sometimes hide the checkboxes in there.)

But crapware is getting sneakier. Even power users are falling for it now. Another way to protect yourself is with… wait for it… an app. Unchecky and WinPatrol are two free Windows programs that work in different ways.

  • WinPatrol snapshots your system and warns you whenever a program tries to install itself.
  • Unchecky sits in the background and when you install a new program, automatically unchecks boxes for unrelated software.

For Chrome users, Google has introduced a “Software Removal Tool” that can scan and pick up on crapware add-ons that may mess with your browsing.

When you can’t get away

But guess what? Many device manufacturers are now pre-bundling their systems with a load of garbage. So there really is no choice.

Once crapware lands on your system (and it will!), you’ll need to weed it out or you’ll get bogged down. Simple tasks could take twice as long – or more – than they should if your system’s bloated with crapware.

You can get rid of it by hand. But the best way if you’re not interested in hours of sifting through a haystack of obscure system folders – is a reliable third-party program which scans your computer for crapware and kills it dead in its tracks. Once it’s done, the app will hang out in the background and stops your system from being invaded.

Those free apps may not be as free as you think if they’re costing you time and money after they’ve messed up your system. But with a few simple security measures, you can breathe easy and sidestep all the crap(ware) heading your way.

What is Chaga Mushroom and why should you take it?

Called the “Mushroom of Immortality,” Chaga mushroom is a potent, safe, anti-cancer agent that can also relieve a wide range of other ailments.

Chaga mushroom (Inonotus obliquus, sometimes known as cinder conk, birch conk or clinker fungus) is a nontoxic fungus that grows naturally on birch trees in cold climates around the world. Its natural black colour is due to its high concentration of melanin, the same compound that causes our skin to tan.

Parasitic Power

Some of Chaga mushroom’s powerful anti-cancer compounds are actually drawn parasitically from the birch trees on which this parasitic mushroom grows. These compounds can also help control metabolic disorders, such as obesity and metabolic syndrome. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, in China it’s believed to extend life by reducing systemic inflammation.

Science has repeatedly proven the power of of Chaga mushroom. It is used worldwide, particularly in Russia, to treat colon cancer, melanomas and other cancers. The beta glucans in Chaga mushroom actually allow the body’s immune cells to recognize cancer cells as “non-self” and destroy them before they spread.

Health Benefits
  • · Antiviral
  • · Anti-inflammatory
  • · Antioxidant
  • · Antimutagenic
  • · Immune stimulant
  • · Anti-tumor
  • · Controls metabolic disorders
  • · Protects liver and kidney function
  • · Source of Beta-Glucan and B vitamins.

Although new to Western physicians, Chaga mushroom has been used throughout Russia and Eastern Europe for generations as a cancer remedy, and contemporary studies have revealed its value in fighting flu viruses, irritable bowel disease and more. Ongoing research is still investigating Chaga mushroom’s potential in treating or preventing herpes, hepatitis, and allergic anaphylactic shock.

Most experts believe that the most effective forms of treatment use the entire fungus, rather than isolated compounds from within it.

Whole Chaga Mushroom in a concentrated capsule is considered by some to be the ideal form, offering…

  • · An instant, easy-to-take format which delivers the full benefit of this time-tested remedy.
  • · The richest source of the all-important enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD), protecting the colon, kidneys and other systems from damage.
  • · A potent antioxidant, increasing cellular health and greatly lowering your chance of disease… strengthening and healing the body naturally.

Why you should avoid Chaga mushroom tea!

Chaga mushroom is usually only available in a “chunk” form, which is steeped and consumed as a tea. But boiling damages Chaga mushroom’s fragile disease-fighting compounds, so the process of making tea at low temperatures is difficult and slow, taking 48 hours and stripping over 90% of Chaga mushroom’s active ingredients.

Instead, look for Chaga mushroom in extract powder form, which condenses the active ingredients into one precision-dose capsule. Easier and more efficient to take, these capsules offer higher levels of its disease-fighting compounds, instantly offering the full health benefits of whole Chaga mushroom without the hassle, wait, or unpleasant taste.

Should you use Bee Propolis?

beepic1 A longtime favorite in the complementary medicine cabinet, and for good reason. But new science is finding even more uses for this tried-and-true remedy than ever thought possible.

Bee Propolis is just one of many useful bee products, including wax, pollen, royal jelly, bee venom, and, of course, the most delicious, honey. Like those other products, Bee Propolis serves an important function in nature: it’s a sticky, resinous substance that bees use to seal up the openings of cells. Gathered from trees and other plants, it’s a natural disinfectant and microbiocide that keeps the hive healthy against bacterial intruders.

A long and buzzing history

Dating back to the time of Aristotle, beekeepers and other observers discovered that those disinfectant properties were useful in humans as well. In a world before antibiotics, desperate patients used it to find relief from mouth and throat pain, as well as healing from all kinds of skin sores and other ailments.

Today, as antibiotics lose their effectiveness due to “smart” superbugs, we can rely once again on a natural remedy that still has the power to turn those invaders on their heads and send them packing.

Bee Propolis is also used today in treating cancer of the nose and throat, for boosting the immune system against viruses like flu, H1N1 flu, and the common cold, as well as for treating gastrointestinal problems including infected peptic ulcers. For treating genital lesions caused by Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV-2), Bee Propolis may in fact be more effective than treatment with a 5% acyclovir ointment.

It can also reverse damage of all kinds, including liver toxicity from acetaminophen overuse, and some studies have shown that it slows damage caused by chemotherapy drugs. Safe and gentle, Bee Propolis won’t interfere with interact with other foods, herbs or supplements, making it a valuable weapon in your protective arsenal.

beepic2 Health Benefits
  • · Builds oral health
  • · Reduces dental pain
  • · Fights cold sores and canker sores
  • · Potent antioxidant
  • · Anti-microbial action
  • · Analgesic
  • · Anesthetic
  • · Anti-inflammatory
  • · Controls tumor growth

Pollen, Propolis or Jelly: Which to choose?

These three bee products have very different origins.

  • Royal Jelly is a thick, creamy fluid synthesized in nurse bees' bodies to nurture queen bees;
  • Bee Pollen is flower pollen collected by honeybees as their main food source, and
  • Bee Propolis is the resinous substance used as a natural antibiotic.

Their uses in complementary and alternative medicine parallel their application in nature:

  • Royal Jelly, for instance, is a wonderful rejuvenator, which can prevent arthritis and slow down other symptoms of aging.
  • Bee Pollen, with its high concentration of nutrients, is usually taken as a nutritional supplement.
  • Bee Propolis is usually used for its antimicrobial properties, to prevent and reverse internal and external damage of all kinds.

All these compounds are found in small quantities in natural honey. But in honey form, you can’t be certain what dose you’re getting, and you can’t apply them topically with any precision.

Capsule, Powder or Spray: What’s the best way to take bee propolis?

Choosing which format to use is a matter of personal preference and the desired application. Follow these guidelines to choose the best Bee Propolis product:

  • · BEE PROPOLIS SPRAY is applied topically, targeted to specific trouble areas, such as the throat, for quick relief and controlled healing. As a topical remedy, it offers quicker, more precise relief for wound cleansing, genital herpes, and cold sores.
  • · BEE PROPOLIS CAPSULES are taken internally, so they can reach inner regions, protecting the liver, lungs, stomach and other bodily systems. This effect flows from the inside out, and still offers significant benefit in the areas of the skin and mouth.

Why You’ll Never Guess America’s Top 5 Most Charitable Cities.

Think earning a lot means giving a lot? There’s really almost no overlap between America’s richest cities and its most generous ones, says a recent CharityNavigator.org study, which assigned an overall score to thirty metro areas around the U.S.

Who are the Top Five?

According to the study, the big five charitable cities are (in order):

  1. San Diego,
  2. Houston,
  3. Kansas City,
  4. Cincinnati and
  5. San Francisco.

So what are the five wealthiest metropolitan areas?

  1. San Francisco, with a median household income of $63,024 (the only city to appear on both lists), followed by
  2. New York-New Jersey,
  3. Baltimore-Washington,
  4. Anchorage and
  5. Minneapolis-St. Paul.

Oh – and the median income in Houston, the country’s second-most charitable city? Only $21,701.

Why are the rich bad at giving?

A recent Time Magazine article asked, “without an emotional response or a name on a building, would people give as generously?” Wealthy people tend to give mainly “to causes that do comparatively little good and are laced with personal benefits,” causes that perhaps have personal significance, but help little in the grand scheme of things.

Although the U.S. is itself one of the Top Five most giving countries, according to the World Giving Index, that includes all forms of “giving behavior,” including volunteerism and helping strangers. When it comes to donating money, only 57% of Americans gave during the study period, ranking the U.S. well behind Ireland (79%) and others like Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the Netherlands.

A pat on the yarmulke?

Among Forbes Magazine’s Top 50 largest charities, only one is Jewish, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, with an annual revenue of $344M. Yet American Jews give well above the national average, says a 2010 study by economist Mark Ottoni-Wilhelm: “Jewish families are both more likely to give, and, when they do give, give larger amounts.”

Talk to your daughter about eating disorders!

etzly_billgracey Can modesty backfire, making us afraid to talk about a life-or-death issue that threatens almost two-thirds of girls in some communities? Get over your denial. Instead, create an opening without embarrassment or shame using these three tips to open up lifelong conversations.

1. Really listen.

What’s the most natural opening? Use something you’ve read lately as a springboard. Ask what she thinks and then… zip it! Hear her out. Any mom of teenagers knows if you try to cram it all in, she’ll tune it all out. Keep the ball rolling later on: “I thought about what you said.” Let her know she can come to you anytime, and when she does, pay attention.

2. Forget Sherlock Holmes.

Don’t bother looking for clues, and don’t try to get her to rat on herself or her friends (“Do you think Amanda’s lost weight?” is not that subtle, mom). Instead, praise the positive: “strong,” “fast,” and “healthy” aren’t just ways to describe sons. “You and Carla did a great job running your camp! It takes stamina to run around after those kids all day.” “Good for you for signing up as a lifeguard again.”

3. Offer better role models.

Does she see you dieting or hear you complaining about your own weight? Praising a too-skinny-to-be-healthy bride? Put a cork in it. An ancient Jewish saying says, “Don’t look at the container, only at what it contains.” Find strong women who are leading the way with kindness and community involvement and talk about them in front of your children – that’s part of the conversation, too.

As for food – keep it holy. Add a family grace or thankfulness ritual to help her remember its source. Don’t try to control every morsel she eats. Instead, as Psychology Today says, “try to let it be, simply, food.”

Why take a multivitamin?

Providing over 25 essential compounds in one easy dose, a multivitamin “fills in the gaps” that you can’t provide every single day just with a well-balanced, healthy diet.

The discovery of vitamins in 1912 was a relatively recent event in the history of medicine, but it was also a revolutionary one, as doctors and scientists realized that many deadly diseases were in fact vitamin deficiencies. Suddenly, a simple vitamin supplement could cure such problems as scurvy, beriberi, rickets, pellagra, and xerophthalmia and night blindness.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is a more recently discovered, complex of symptoms that even at a very mild level can cause fatigue, depression and poor memory. At higher levels, it can cause more serious fatigue and memory impairment, along with irritability, depression and personality change.

Drawing on a century of research and advice from leading nutritionists, today’s multivitamins contain a well-researched blend of vitamins, minerals, and other compounds that boost strength and offer other powerful advantages.

Today, the Harvard School of Public Health calls a daily multivitamin “a great nutrition insurance policy,” and we couldn’t agree more. Vitamin D alone, they say, “can lower the risk of colon and possibly many other cancers, as well as other chronic diseases.” Other prominent centers agree, recommending multivitamin/mineral supplements for an essential supply of vitamins and essential minerals needed to preserve health.
